Scion was a marketing exercise. Little more than a #brand to stick onto Toyotas so people don’t associate them with the rest of the beige flock. They’re Toyotas, and henceforth they’ll be sold as Toyotas like they are in the rest of the world. Everything returns to the norm.

Also at least partially to blame for Toyota killing off the MR2 and the Celica.

I’m just going to sit here and sob into my CokeII, or is that Crystal Pepsi?

Eh, it wasn’t purely marketing. There were some practical factors that set it apart; namely the no-haggle thing.
The problem was Toyota was never willing to go all the way. They wanted to make a brand to appeal to younger drivers but weren’t willing to make cars that did so.

They could have taken one look at Saturn to see where half measures went.

I hope the iM continues in the long term. It’s a good product and continues the Matrix spirit. Don’t really care about the iA, but I am sad that the xB died with a 2002-ish interior and a 4-speed transmission. It had so much potential.
As for the brand itself, I agree with you—no reason to exist.

Really?! It was a time when everyone was killing their sports cars, and neither were setting the world on fire. How is Scion to blame?

I don’t know about that. By 2005, figures for both the Celica and MR2 had bottomed out, and had been steadily declining since 2001.

Yes, I’d much rather buy a Corolla iM than a Scion iM, and a Toyota 86 than a Scion FR-S.
In the US Scion has also acquired a rather undesirable image. Their marketing campaign of “individualisation” featured too many slammed cars and rolling A/V systems, damning their practical models (such as the xB, or your Rukus) into “oh that’s useful, but......it’s a Scion. ”

It also sounds like they were playing into the hearts of young people - ie. people who don’t have the money to buy a brand new car.
While driving away the more mature folks who do.
